Backup Power For Cold Storage

websitebuilder • Jul 29, 2022

Many homeowners and small businesses have cold storage units, or large freezers, that require constant cold temperatures, losing power could be an incredibly costly incident.

We here at Hurricane Home Solutions have been in the power business for quite some time, and we often get to have interesting conversations with customers and homeowners about their needs and intended uses. Often the explanation is pretty simple: we don’t want to deal with power outages anymore. And to that we say: fair enough, that is after all the main appeal of backup power, not dealing with inconvenience.

However, some homeowners (and small business owners) have something more specific in mind for needing backup power. An example we’ve encountered on a few different occasions is cold storage. Big freezer/locker for meat and other perishables? Yup. We’ve also installed a generator for someone who has a small business making novelty baked goods including things like very expensive wedding cakes. An extended power outage could potentially cost thousands in damaged products and untold hours of labor.

Perishable goods can good bad quickly during an extended power-outage.

When installing a home generator and picking out the right unit, the two biggest considerations are how many appliances and “things” you have to power, and what of those things you actually want to power during an outage. Partial installations, in which only certain circuits are set to run on the backup generator, are often requested for these sorts of projects.

Most (but not all) homes trying to run a backup generator will require something within the range of 13kW to 20kW, but that typical power draw changes quite dramatically when you factor something like a cold storage unit into the mix. If your only concern is the storage, then you can get a partial install with a smaller generator, making sure you only choose the handful of circuits that are most critical to your home or small business operation.

Cummins 13kW Generator

You always have the option as well of purchasing a larger generator, but it is important to keep in mind that the price of your project will scale with the size of the generator, and generators moving into the high 20kW and 30kW models tend to be considerably larger and louder across all different brands and models; this may not be much of an issue for some but could be a serious deterrent for others.
