Backup Power For Your Home in The Storm

websitebuilder • Sep 08, 2021

On August 29th, 2021 Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on and quickly swept through the North East causing heavy winds and flooding throughout New Jersey and New York, among other states. Many homes and businesses and additional areas sustained heavy damage, but even more places were dealing with the ramifications of all the structural damage, impaired public services and power outages.

Many homeowners in New York were left reeling without power for far longer than they expected, while others were discovering the benefits of their home standby generators, backup power supplies that run on propane or natural gas and are specifically designed to keep the lights on during unforeseen power outages. According to the New York Post, around 130,000 were left without power in the Tri-State area for (in some cases) over a week.

Hurricane's and storms cause power-outages

We’re all too familiar with unpredictable weather here in New York. In your average year we get everything from high gusts to flooding to snow storms. Natural events often cause power outages without much in the way of advanced warning. Some homeowners will go days without power, others may have small portable generators they use for emergency devices or to power a small electrical draw. Some homeowners elect to purchase standby generators because of their capacity and convenience, which will allow most homes to remain fully powered indefinitely during outages.

Although New York is particularly susceptible to these natural forces, states all across the country are subjected to elongated power outages and unfavorable conditions. Earlier this year Texas experienced an unprecedented snow storm that froze their grid and left over 4 million people in the state without power. Homeowners who had backup power were able to keep the lights on and became a safe haven for their neighbors. This Wall Street Journal article follows one family as they powered their way through the storm with their standby generator.

At Hurricane Home Solutions we offer and recommend that homeowners take advantage of our free power assessment, which helps to identify which kind and size generator would be best for their home. Give us a call directly at (585) 244-0099 to learn more.

For residents of the North East, one of the more common causes of power outages is related to snow storms and high winds. Temperatures in parts of the state can go well below freezing in some areas and circumstances. Not all home generators will perform optimally in colder conditions, and may require an extreme cold weather kit.
