Cummins V.S. Kohler Generator
We compare and contrast two of the best home generators on the market, the Cummins and Kohler Standby Generators.
When Hurricane Home Solutions was created we wanted to make sure we were setting our customers up with the best possible power solutions. We looked at a wide variety of options and came to the conclusion that the Cummins brand produced the best unit at the best price. We knew that Cummins would be the best fit for our customers, but we also knew that it would be necessary for us to explain the differences between Cummins and other brands to our customers who were on the fence.
When we go through the process of identifying the needs of homeowners and the products they are interested in we often end up discussing a wide variety of different manufacturers and products. We like to steer people away from Generics and Briggs and Stratton generators because of the general inferior quality and rampant service issues. If you aren’t willing to consider a Cummins, Kohler is one of the few other brands we would recommend to homeowners.
The things that both of these units get right are in their engineering and manufacturer support. During our internal discovery for which product we would be investing our knowledge and expertise into, Cummins and Kohler were the top runners almost immediately, particularly because of their quality and performance. As installers, we want to avoid units that will require constant service calls and repair issues, and the combined experience of our electricians and industry professionals indicated that Cummins and Kohler would be the best choices.
The Volume Difference Between Cummins, Kohler and Other Competitors:
- It probably won’t be too much of a shock to most home or car owners that engines are actually quite loud while running. With standby generators, the volume can range from barely noticeable, mildly irritating, and insufferably loud. Kohler is by no means the loudest, but the Cummins Quiet Connect Series Generators are by far the quietest running unit on the market. Take a look at the video below:
Cummins Generators Superior Performance in Cold Weather:
- In their default condition, Cummins generators operate flawlessly all the way down to 0°F, and can be equipped with an “Extreme Cold Weather Kit” to bring that temperature range down to -40°F. In our opinion, this kind of Cold Weather performance is absolutely necessary in the north east, where we often have brutal winters.
- Kohler standby generators (and most other manufacturers as well) also offer cold weather kits, the performance of which is not specified.
Cummins Withstand the Test of Time:
- Cummins has been in the business of creating renowned engines since engines were invented, so they know a thing or two about doing it right. The Cummins standby generators are quieter than competitors, built stronger and last longer.
- Cummins Generators also come with a smartphone application that allows you to remotely monitor your generator status and keep an eye on whether or not there’s power when you aren’t home. Speaking of which…
Remote Monitoring an Mobile Apps:
- It is slowly becoming common practice for many manufacturers to include some degree of wifi connectivity to their standby generators, for the general purpose of status updates and remote monitoring.
- The functionality of these apps vary quite a bit, the Cummins Cloud App allows for remote starting, but that isn’t true of all of them. Bizarrely, the Kohler app actually includes a yearly fee, which seems unnecessary given the high price of a generator to begin with.
The Cummins Quite Connect series is quieter than competitors like, they have a more robust and fulfilled warranty, they also have a longer lifespan and they also have more features than most competitors. with yearly maintenance, you can expect a Cummins unit to last between 20-25 years. This lifespan is among the highest in the industry, even compared to other well-built units that do not have persistent maintenance issues.
