Removing Viruses and Bacteria from Your Water

websitebuilder • Jan 25, 2023

For homeowners researching solutions to bacteria and viruses in their water, there are a few different methods of water treatment systems available.

Besides the removal of contaminants and heavy metals, bacteria and viruses or one of the most common water quality issues to deal with. Thankfully, there are a few water treatment methods that can eliminate bacteria and viruses, keeping your home water supply clean and fresh. Multiple treatment methods exist, some involving the use of chemicals and others that do not, which may be a meaningful difference for some homeowners.

We always recommend that homeowners get their water tested before purchasing any water treatment systems, as to ensure that the systems they purchase is the one that is needed to treat their water. Looks can be deceiving in this regard, and nothing can beat an actual test of your current water conditions. Water treatment companies like ours will generally offer a free water test as part of a consultation, or you can pay to have your water tested by a state lab.

Bacteria and viruses are often present in water private wells and water tables

Ultraviolet Light Purification

In recent years, Ultraviolet Lights have become incredibly popular with homeowners, primarily because of their efficacy, size and moderate prices. This technology is newer than most water purifiers and treatment systems but is very effective and kills 99.9% of bacteria. Essentially, the system uses one or two U.V. Lights to irradiate water as it passes through the system. These systems are also popular with individuals who do not want their water treated with chemicals.

It’s important to note that U.V. Light is only effective at eliminating living organisms in the water, and will not do anything with other contaminants or minerals. Depending on your water conditions and what other problems you may have, a U.V. system is sometimes paired with another system (such as a conditioner or an R.O. unit) to deal with the materials that a U.V. Light does not eliminate.

Chlorination System

Chlorine is probably the most commonly used water treatment method, and has been widely used for a very long time. Most municipalities in the United States even use some level of chlorination on their municipal water supply. A commonly cited benefit of chlorination is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to most other water treatment methods.

Obviously, this is a chemical process, one that many homeowners would rather avoid since they do not want to be consuming a large amount of chlorine from their daily water intake. We have even installed systems for home owners that remove chlorine from  the water after it has been disinfected. In short, chlorine is highly effective, but many homeowners do not want to be consuming it regularly.

Distillation, Ozone and Other Point-of-Use Systems

Although these methods are generally not suitable for purifying all the water output of an entire home, they are suitable for use on a single faucet or as their own water spout. If the water in your home is unsuitable for human consumption you may choose to install a single access point that purifies a smaller amount of drinking water.

Treatment systems that use Ozone operate similarly to U.V., Ozone is forced into the water which oxidizes and then kills organic contaminants. Distillers employ the time-tested boil and evaporate method to water purification. This process is slow but it is also cheap and effective. A single point-of-use system like this can be useful for homeowners who are working on a small budget and need drinking water on a small scale.
